DESIGN GUIDE

High-Voltage Solid-State Relay Active Precharge Reference Design

Description

This reference design introduces an innovative circuit topology to precharge large DC link capacitors for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and electric vehicles (EV). The reference design features a system which does not require a microcontroller and can be operated with a 5-V supply. The reference design has reinforced isolation rating of 5-kVRMS with the TPSI3052-Q1. TPSI3052-Q1 device integrates a laminate transformer to achieve isolation while transferring signal and power to the secondary side. This removes the need for a discrete isolated bias supply. In addition, the TPSI3052-Q1 device can supply power to external circuitry located on the high voltage (HV) side to monitor current. This reference design can support up to 800-V systems with up to 4-AAVG charging current to charge up to 2-mF of load capacitance.
